“I help people think about things in a different way.”
I take research, distinctive brand elements, plus whatever is going on in culture, and add how people behave; then I mix those up and design something to influence people to make particular choices.
Some of what I’m doing now. I love brands and human behavior, and I love that intersection with space design. If I could somehow integrate human behavioral economics, branding, and interior design to create cultural branding through living workspaces, I’d do that for free, all day long.
That my job is tactical—that my job is to make lists of marketing tactics for people to sell, which completely leaves out all the research, motivational factors, behavioral work, and trying to figure out what will convince people to act.
Change is the only thing that is constant—people aren’t afraid of change; they’re afraid of loss. The prospect of loss is so much scarier than the promise of gain. So every time I find myself hung up on something, I ask myself, “What do I have to lose? What am I afraid of losing?” And sometimes that thing isn’t real. Once I know it’s just a projection, I can keep on going.
I’m in the process of getting certified as a Yoga Teacher, so I donate my time to give classes to those who wouldn’t otherwise have access to that. I’m an Interior design enthusiast, so I sometimes partner with flippers and friends to bring form and function to everyday spaces, which is definitely better than kitschiness and chaos. Then in my “free time” (laughs out loud), I’ve volunteered for Friends of Riley, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Humane Society, and Forest Glen School of Spanish Immersion.
